QUICK HITS:

Stigler lead all of Class 3A with four shutouts in 2022. The Panthers have blanked 12 teams in the past three seasons.

Berryhill and Stigler are grouped in the same district for the first time since 1999. The Chiefs eliminated the Panthers last year in the first round of the playoffs 28-6.

OFFENSE

The words playoffs and Stigler Panther football have become synonymous over the past seven years and 2022 could very easily make it eight in a row. As Panther alum Cade Shearwood begins his second year as the Stigler head coach, he has a lot of talent and experience in his crew. “We will be an older team that has experience in big time football games so that’s very promising,’ said Shearwood. “We will be senior heavy with a few sophomores and juniors mixed in that will bring everything together on both sides of the ball.” On the offensive side it starts with VYPE Top 100 pick Will Rose (5-11, 170, Sr.) at wide receiver. Rose grabbed 39 passes last year for 613 yards and had 800 all-purpose yards for Stigler. Rose will have to share his receptions with Morgan Jones (6-1, 180, Sr.) who caught 21 balls for 543 yards in 2021 and Mason Jones (5-10, 165, Jr.). Throwing the ball again to those guys will be talented quarterback Mckade Peery (5-11, 165, Jr.) who threw for over 1,800 yards and 21 TDs as well as rushing for 885 yards in his sophomore season. Jace Winkle (6-4, 215, Sr.) was a tight end last year but may be called to duty as the Panthers running back this year without an incumbent returning. The line will be in great shape with the return of Kegan Good (5-11, 270, Sr.). “Kegan is a leader on our team and holds others accountable to the high standards of our program,” said Shearwood. “He is the anchor of the offensive line and is hard to handle on the defensive line.”

DEFENSE

Like the offense, the defense returns nine players from a team that gave up an average of less than 15 points a game and had seven games where they gave up six or fewer points. The leading returning tackler with 103 is Ace Engle (5-10, 195, Jr.) at the middle linebacker spot where he’s joined on the edges by Martin Hare (5-10, 175, Sr.) who had 83 tackles and six sacks in 2021 and Mason Jones who recorded 69 tackles and seven sacks. Rose, with five oskies last year, and Morgan Jones with 67 tackles last season, will man the secondary while Good will be the man in charge of the D-line in Shearwood’s 3-4 defense where stopping the run is the primary goal. There will be a couple of changes to Stigler’s 3A-3 district this year with the addition of perennial playoff power Berryhill and Muldrow, dropping from 4A.
