9 Questions with Heavener’s Ava Cartwright Presented by Dowden-Roberts Funeral Home

VYPE: What inspired you to start playing your sport?

Ava Cartwright: I started out at school but fell in love in second grade. I’ve always loved going to the gym with my dad to shoot. I believe my dad helped me fall in love with the sport.

VYPE: What challenges have you faced in your sports journey, and how did you overcome them?

AC: This year, I hurt my back and my knee, and it’s been rough trying to get back to where I was. I am slowly getting there; I just need to continuously improve myself.

VYPE: What role do your coaches play in your development as an athlete, and is there a particular coach who has been especially influential?

AC: I didn’t just have one coach who has helped me. My father was my coach, he pushed me. My high school coach made me want to work harder.  I’ve had many coaches in my life who have all helped me in some way.

VYPE: Can you share a memorable moment or achievement from your high school sports career that stands out to you?

AC: Last year at our sports banquet, I received an award for most points, rebounds and assists. That was a big moment for me because I stepped up for my team and I was very proud of myself.

VYPE: Are there any specific rituals or routines you follow before a game or competition to prepare yourself mentally and physically?

AC: My mom’s tries to make me mad before every game, so I am ready to play.

VYPE: Can you tell us a bit about your background, both in terms of academics and sports?

AC: I have always been around sports. My dad’s a coach and I’ve always had good grades; it is a requirement in my house. I like being successful in whatever I do. I like to be number one in school and sports.

VYPE: How do you balance the demands of academics and athletics in your daily schedule?

AC: I make sure I have my college or high school work finished before I do anything because my education is important to me. Ball won’t last forever.

VYPE: How has being part of a team influenced your personal growth and character development?

AC: Being a part of my team and team captain has taught me leadership roles, how to deal with certain situations, with people and to apply it to life.

VYPE: What are your plans after high school?

AC: I plan to become a physician’s assistant after high school.
