HEAVENER WOLVES

GIRLS

Coach: Curtis Curry

22-23 Record: 7-17

With a roster loaded with seniors, the Heavener Wolves are looking to rebound from a rebuilding year and get back on the winning track in 2023. After going 22-6 in 2021 and advancing to the area tournament, the gals had to regroup last year and didn’t make it out of the regionals. But second-year coach Curtis Curry is optimistic that things will start to turn the other way this year. “This year’s team is hopeful. They want to be good and they’re putting in the work to get there. They are starting to know what needs to be done and are learning how to do that.” There are seven seniors on the roster for the gals this year which should provide a lot of leadership ability. The point guard spot looks to be shared by Mariana Garcia (5-5) and Bryleigh Edmondson (5-6). The forward spots also find plenty of senior power with Brooklyn May (5-7), Ava Cartwright (5-8), Faith Wann (5-4), and Paisley Stacy (5-9). In the paint, look for senior Cayleigh McGee (5-10) to control the inside. The Wolves have just one junior who will be looking to break through with some playing time in Kaylee Chronister (5-2) who plays the point.

Several sophomores also dot the roster with the most promising being, according to Curry, Taylee Baker (5-6). “Taylee is an overall team player who can knock down the three and is just a very uplifting person to be around. She will definitely do big things for Heavener.” Other sophomores who will look to gain playing time while adding depth for the Wolves are Britlee Reed (5-5), Valeria Sanchez (5-0), and Alli Palmer (5-5). The seniors on this team have seen what it takes to make a strong basketball team as most were around for that 2021 season and they’ve also experienced the disappointment of a not-so-good season so there’s hope that coach Curry is right that they will do the work necessary to turn the 2023 season into a winning one for Heavener’s girls.
