Howe’s Slatey Free Athlete Spotlight Presented by Dowden-Roberts Funeral Home

Slatey Free, a distinguished student-athlete at Howe High School, brings both academic excellence and athletic prowess to the forefront of her high school journey. Graduating with a perfect 4.0 GPA and a history of winning state championships in basketball, softball and track, Slatey reflects the spirit of a true scholar-athlete.

Slatey reflected on the impact of watching the “big kids” play basketball, an experience that has shaped her own journey: “I loved watching the older girls play ball. I have always loved watching basketball and playing it,” she recalled, attributing her inspiration to the genuine passion she developed for the sport at an early age.

In terms of role models, Slatey looks up to Jalei Oglsby for her mentorship and leadership, stating, “She has always been a great player and always took time to mentor me.” She also admires Caitlin Clark for her exceptional three-point game.

Balancing academics and athletics demand “self-discipline and determination.” Slatey’s commitment to putting “God first, family second, academics third and sports fourth” showcases her approach to maintaining this balance.

A pinnacle moment in Slatey’s high school sports career was playing in the Big House, an experience she cherishes, especially with her team and the seniors. Overcoming challenges and maintaining confidence during tough times on the court have been crucial aspects of her sports journey.

“Being part of a team has influenced my personal growth by putting God first, learning to be happy for others when they succeed and expecting failure along the way to success,” she shared, highlighting the impact of teamwork on her character development.

Coaches play a significant role in Slatey’s development, with Coach Brown emphasizing giving glory to God, respecting others and maintaining a positive perspective. “That this is the day that the Lord has made; we will be glad and rejoice in it,” she quoted.

Slatey Free’s journey is a testament to resilience, commitment and faith. Her story, marked by academic achievements, championship victories, and valuable life lessons learned through sports, stands as an inspiration for her peers at Howe High School and beyond.
