In his everyday life, as well as when he’s playing basketball, Braydan Ward is determined to find a way to win.
Now, as a senior in the midst of his final season playing basketball at McCurtain High School, Ward has one definite goal in mind.
“Playing sports has taught me to never give up and believe that anything is possible,” explained Ward, who wears the No. 3 jersey for the Bulldogs. “Because this is my final season, I’m determined to do everything I can to help lead our team back to the state tournament.”
When asked to choose three words that best describe his approach to life, Ward didn’t hesitate with what matters most.
“I try to be kind and observant, but more importantly, show people by my actions how much I care, because if you don’t care about whatever you’re doing, there’s no reason to do it,” he said.
A consummate team player, Ward credits the influence of his teammates for his all-in, hard-work approach.
“Zane Cooper absolutely won’t give up at any point. He’s always working hard at whatever he’s doing,” explained Ward. “Ben Bond has been a big impression on me. The two of us lifted weights almost everyday over the summer.”
And of course, there’s a special connection with his coach, Jason Ward, who is also his dad.
“There’s a real bond between dad and me,” Braydan said. “On the court it’s all business, coach and player, but everywhere else it’s father and son.”
His coach agrees.
“Braydan understands that he’s expected to be the example to show that every player has the power to become better if you’re willing to put in work,” Jason said. “But when we leave the gym, it’s me and him wanting the best for each other.”
As one of the team captains at McCurtain, Ward strives to be the consistent example of what it takes to be successfully driven by the influence of his favorite NBA player, Jimmy Butler of the Miami Heat.
“Leadership isn’t telling someone what to do. It’s about doing what’s right on and off the floor and setting the example for others to follow,” Braydan said.
And to repeat the well-known words of Jimmy Valvano, the efforts of Braydan Ward speak loud and strong.
“Never give up, NEVER give up.”
