McCurtain’s Kaylee Culwell Athlete Spotlight Presented by San Boise Home Health

In the close-knit community of McCurtain High School, sophomore Kaylee Culwell stands out not only for her academic excellence but also for her unwavering commitment to basketball. As the pages of Kaylee’s story unfold, we delve into her journey, marked by familial support, a battle against adversity and an inspiring perspective on the true essence of sports.

Coming from a loving family, Kaylee expresses gratitude for her parents’ unyielding support and the lively influence of her two younger sisters. Sporting a perfect 4.0 GPA, Kaylee manages the balancing act between academics and sports.

Kaylee’s basketball journey finds its roots in the encouragement and guidance of her father. Adopted at a young age, she vividly recalls being introduced to the sport in first grade, a connection that has only strengthened over the years. “When my dad and mom adopted me, I remember them putting me on a team in first grade, and I’ve loved it ever since.”

On the court, Kaylee takes pride in her rebounding skills, overcoming physical challenges. “A big accomplishment for me is my rebounding. I’m not the strongest person on the court, and I try to work hard to get the ball,” she reflected, embodying resilience in the face of obstacles.

Kaylee faces the unique challenge of dealing with Cystic Fibrosis, a condition affecting her breathing and weight. With unwavering faith, breathing treatments and a hearty diet, she defies the limitations, crediting her resilience to a higher power. “What really gets me through this challenge is God. He has never failed me and never will,” Kaylee affirmed.

Being part of a team has imparted valuable life lessons to Kaylee. Understanding the significance of teamwork, she emphasizes the bigger picture, echoing her dad’s wisdom: “Good players get stats, but good teams win games.”

In coach Bryan Schlekeway, Kaylee finds more than just a basketball mentor. The caring and genuine interest he exhibits in her well-being transcend the court. “Most coaches focus primarily on winning. Coach Schlekeway genuinely cares about me and the girls, and that goes deeper than basketball,” she stated.

As for her future, Kaylee contemplates playing college basketball but remains open to other paths. With a heart inclined towards helping others, she envisions a role as a counselor for teenagers or pursuing a career in nursing.
