McCurtain’s Luke Sandlin – Athlete Spotlight – Presented By Compassion Home Care

I’m starting with the man in the mirror…I’m asking him to change his ways. And no message could’ve been any clearer if they wanna make the world a better place. Take a look at yourself and then make a change.

Written by Michael Jackson

The lyrics of the song aptly describe the day-to-day approach to life of Luke Sandlin, a junior at McCurtain High School.

“I try to be a leader for my teammates, my school, community and my family,” replied Sandlin. “Before others will be willing to follow, you have to do whatever it takes to be a game changer. Let your actions speak louder than words.”

On the basketball court, Sandlin is one of the players that coach Jason Ward knows he can rely upon no matter the score.

“It’s more than just points that make Luke important to our team and our school. He’s worked hard to sharpen his basketball skills as a shooter and his playmaking talents,” replied the head coach of the Bulldogs basketball team. “On and off the court, Luke is a full of life young man with a busy schedule. It’s easy to see that he gives his full attention to everything he does.”

Described by friends and family as caring and funny, Luke has a firm grasp on what matters most.

“Work hard and no matter the score, never give up,” replied Sandlin. “I try to treat people like I want to be treated. For me, that’s being big hearted and helping others find a way to win.”

The helping hand approach for Luke is something he credits to the influence of his life at home.

“My mom (Amanda Shaffer) has been a single mom most of my life. She never made excuses; mom always put my sisters and me first every day. She taught me by example the importance of making life better for others.”

Before every practice or a game, Luke turns to music to find his hype to energize his game plan.

“Be the game changer. Be the person that bring others attitudes and their efforts back to a positive so that together everybody wins.”
