With the spring sports season coming to a close, track and field teams across the state of Oklahoma are finishing up their postseason competitions. Muldrow Track Senior Carmen Fields is reflective of her last season and what sports have taught her throughout her life.
“Sports have taught me to be hardworking, competitive and perseverant,” Fields said. “These attributes will help me in attaining my goals, present and future.”
Fields, who participated in shot put and discus for the Muldrow Track team, understands just how impactful sports can be during impressionable years and beyond. They teach valuable skills including reliability, work ethic, teamwork and others.
“My favorite part of being on a team is the friendships and memories made, and working toward a common goal,” Fields said. “I have learned to deal with difficulties and how to persevere together.”
Coaches can be some of the most influential people in our lives. They can mold us into the people we will be, show us how to handle adversity and provide guidance during times of uncertainty. Fields reiterates this sentiment.
“Coach Jana Armer has been an amazing mentor for me,” Fields said. “She is always encouraging and gives great words of advice.”
According to Fields, she values this advice and implements it in her daily life.
“My coaches and family have always demanded 100% from me, and I am so grateful for their continued support,” Fields said. “They have truly shown me what it means to be hardworking, dedicated and perseverant.”
In her free time, Fields enjoys crocheting, kayaking, reading, playing basketball and spending time with her family and friends.
Post-graduation plans for Fields include attending Neosho County Community College in Neosho, Missouri where she will pursue a degree in nursing.
Other activities that Fields participates in include Cherokee Quiz Bowl, basketball, cross country and slow pitch softball.
