You might say that sophomore Diezel Davis is the engine that makes the Okay Mustangs go. Or in the words of his coach Chad Clark, “Diezel doesn’t miss”. 

“Diezel shoots 600 shots a day without fail and he has the strongest work ethic of anyone I’ve ever coached,” said Clark. “He doesn’t care if there’s a birthday party or a night out with friends, he takes his shots before he does any of that. In the last two years, he’s probably taken 200,000 shots. He just loves the game and is the ultimate gym rat.” 

In addition to playing hoops for the Mustangs, Diezel also plays on a couple of summer league teams and plays baseball for Okay as well. 

“I started playing basketball in the second or third grade and fell in love with the game and wanted to succeed in it. That’s what keeps me going and I guess I just inherited this work ethic from my parents,” said Davis who is also involved in FCCLA. 

Diezel ( he says his mom just liked the name) is the Mustangs point guard and averaged 14 points and six assists per game last year. He says he watches a lot of players and tries to pick up some of the things they do though he has focused somewhat on a couple of former Oklahoma City Thunder players. 

“I used to watch Russell Westbrook a lot but lately I’ve enjoyed watching Chris Paul. He’s the leader on the floor, can score whenever and takes the game so seriously. I just love the way he plays.” 

Though he’s just a sophomore, he has that leadership quality about him by working hard on the court and in the weight room according to Clark. 

“I think I’m a pretty quiet kind of leader. I think the others see how hard I work and it makes them want to work harder too,” said Diezel who has goal of averaging 20 points a game this year. 

After going 14-8 and making it to the area tournament last year, Davis feels like the Mustangs can take it a step further this year. 

“I feel like we can make it to state this year. People say we’re undersized, but I think it’s going to be tough to beat us. We’ve all played together since elementary school and know each other pretty well.”
