Poteau’s Annika Dill Athlete Spotlight Presented by Sans Bois Hospice

By Payton Moody

Annika Dill, a talented softball player for the Poteau Lady Pirates, brings her A-game to every pitch, inspiring her team both on and off the field.

When asked about her favorite coach, Dill’s choice is both heartfelt and obvious. Her father, Ryan Dill, is the head coach of her softball team. “He pushes me to be my very best,” Dill said. “I wouldn’t be where I am today if he hadn’t been coaching me all these years.”

Dill’s freshman year brought her a steadfast supporter in Kylie Turner, a senior at the time. “I believe her to be my biggest supporter and a teammate who never failed to pick me up through the good and bad,” Dill shares.

Among the many teachers who have made a difference in Dill’s life, Rachael Hackler holds a special place. “She showed patience and taught me that you never know what someone else is going through.”

This off-season, Dill’s focus was on recovery from an ACL injury. “I worked mainly on ACL recovery, making sure I was ready when it was go-time,” Dill said. “I got a lot faster and stronger during this off-season.”

Softball, for Dill, is more than a game; it’s a plethora of life lessons. “Softball has led me to many places, introduced me to lifelong friends, and provided countless amazing memories and lessons that will stick with me forever,” she said. “But, in the end, it’s just a game, and all the things you gain from it mean so much more.”

Dill’s favorite softball memory is deeply personal. “Getting to play for my dad, seeing his big smile every time I hit a home run rounding second base, there’s nothing like it,” she recalls.

As the new softball season dawns, Dill’s goals are clear. “I hope to make it to the state tournament and cherish every moment of my senior season,” she says.

Beyond high school, Dill’s dreams involve continuing her softball journey. “I plan to continue playing softball at the University of Tulsa and major in exercise sports and science,” she said. Her ultimate ambition is to become a physical therapist, combining her passion for sports with her desire to help others.
