Q’s with Muldrow’s Kennedi Wight

VYPE: Who has been your favorite coach throughout your career and how did they impact you as a player?

Kennedi WightI actually have two favorite coaches. My favorite school ball coach is Coach Jana Armer. She has believed in me from the very start and has been a huge part of the success I have had in my athletic career. I can’t thank her enough for everything she has done for me. My favorite travel ball coach is Coach James Asberry. He has pushed me past limits I didn’t know I could break. He has taught me so much about the game and opened up numerous doors for me.

VYPE: Did you have any teammates that you admire or that supported you?

KW: I have had several teammates who have supported me through the years.  My freshman year, the seniors on the team were my biggest supporters and they taught me how to believe in myself on and off the court.

VYPE: Who was your favorite teacher and how were they influential in your life?

KW: My favorite teacher would have to be John Harvell. He knows how to connect with his students and make learning fun. He always considers his student well-being and has made an impact on not only my life but other students as well.

VYPE: What preparation have you taken this off-season to better equip yourself for the upcoming season?

KW: I spent all summer training daily on my own and with my travel team.  I played several big tournaments in Kentucky, Florida, Kansas, Texas and Missouri. I really focused this summer on making my game three-dimensional.  I want to be able to hit deep threes, drain shots at mid-range and make strong drives to the goal.

VYPE: What has your sport taught you that you use in your daily life?

KW: It has taught me perseverance; to be consistent and that if I show up every day, ready to work hard, I can obtain my goals. I also have learned to be accountable for myself and others.

VYPE: What has been your favorite memory in your sport?

KW: It’s pretty hard to just pick one memory.  Freshman year, I was able to play with my older sister. I had always wanted to play with her and when I started playing up, my dreams came true. It ended up being the best season ever. I also could never forget the night I scored my 1,000-career point. My team, my family and my community made the night so special.

VYPE: What do you hope to accomplish this season?

KW:An individual goal of mine is to make it to 1,500 career points. I believe that it is very achievable and I have put in the work to accomplish it. I also am wanting to continue my range on my three pointers to prepare for college ball.  A team goal would be to make it to state. Every day, we practice for one ultimate goal and hopefully it will pay off.

VYPE: What matchup are you most looking forward to this season?

KW: It being my senior year, I am honestly looking forward to all of them.

VYPE: What are your plans after high school?

KW: My plans after high school are to attend college and further my athletic and academic career.  I currently plan to major in exercise science and minor in education.  I could see myself pursuing a job in coaching in the future.
