Spiro Bulldogs Boys Basketball Preview – Presented by Wright’s Sunset Corner

BOYS
Coach: Dustin Gist
21-22 Record: 11-15

Spiro may begin this season as a young squad but if past history proves anything the Bulldogs will have plenty of bark and bite by the end of the year making them a tough contender in the playoffs. “We lost a lot of experience on the court due to graduation,” said head coach Dustin Gist, who begins his 19th year at the school. “This year’s squad play and work hard and I expect us to only get better as players begin filling their roles.” Zander Riggs (6-3, Sr.) will lead the pack after averaging 6.1 points and 6.0 rebounds while dishing out 3-plus assists per game a year ago. “He is a very tough player that does all the things you need done, very unselfish and extremely competitive,” explained Gist. “An excellent passer, Zander can guard any spot on the floor, and he rebounds well.”

Defense is a trademark of Spiro basketball and Gabe Perez (5-11, Sr.) continues that trait. “Gabe goes hard on both ends of the court and makes plays just because of his hustle,” said Gist. The length and versatility of Brycen Graham (6-5, So.) who averaged 4.2 points and 3.0 rebounds as a freshman will give Gist and the Bulldogs size inside as well as the ability to run the floor. “The limited minutes he played on a senior heavy team were very productive. Brycen can do a lot of things on both ends of the floor,” Gist said in anticipation of a breakout season for the sophomore. A quartet of guards will be among the other players that will be counted upon as playmakers this season including Tommy Worton (5-11, Sr.), Hunter Sparks (5-10, Jr.), Coy Clark (5-9, Jr.) and Bryson Spears (5-9 Jr.).
