Claremore Sequoyah’s Sonny Proctor – Track Spotlight

Sonny Proctor, a senior, shines as an athletic star in the center football and track at Claremore Sequoyah High School. With a commanding presence on the football field and a lightning-fast stride on the track, Sonny’s journey embodies the essence of hard work and dedication.

Guiding Sonny along his path to success are his parents, Billy and Quinn Proctor, who instilled in him the value of hard work and perseverance. “My parents have taught me that you must be willing to work hard to achieve your goals,” Sonny affirmed, acknowledging their profound influence on his life.

In the classroom, Sonny has found inspiration in his math teacher, Mr. Brad Holt, and his science teacher, Ms. Stephanie Kehler. Their passion for their subjects has ignited Sonny’s curiosity and deepened his interest in mathematics and science.

Achieving success in sports requires sacrifice, and Sonny has dedicated himself wholeheartedly to his athletic pursuits. “Academically and athletically, it was sacrificing other activities such as video games, skateboarding and hanging out with friends,” he explained, highlighting the discipline required to excel in both arenas.

Among the highlights of his athletic career, Sonny cherishes the opportunity to compete alongside his brother, Acee, and his achievement of placing sixth in the 110 Hurdles at the State Track Meet last year.

When it comes to competition, Sonny relishes the challenge posed by worthy adversaries. “I enjoy competing with the athletes that I have run against throughout my high school career,” he shared, citing fellow athletes such as Bodee Carter, Zach Prince, Cooper Sparks and Roger Reed as formidable opponents who push him to his limits.

In practice, Sonny finds motivation in the fierce determination of teammate Lakota Campos. “During football season, I enjoyed working against Lakota Campos the most because he treated practice like a game and was one of the hardest hitters,” Sonny said.

Beyond the field and track, Sonny is actively involved in student council and serves as the Senior Class Historian, demonstrating his commitment to his school and community.

Looking ahead, Sonny plans to attend William Jewell College to pursue a degree in civil engineering while continuing his football career.

Representing his school and community is a responsibility that Sonny does not take lightly. “I hope I have properly represented my school and community in a positive way that the underclassmen and especially other young native Americans can see that by setting goals and working hard, you can be an athlete and a valedictorian.”
