Keys High School boys golf team wins academic state title – Presented by Northeastern Health System

Consistency has been the name of the game for the Keys High School golf program, both on the course and in the classroom.

The Cougars, under the guidance of head coach Dick Goss, advanced to their third state tournament in the last four years in May and finished ninth as a team.

The Cougars shot a 338 in the opening round, followed with a 333, and closed with a third-round score of 329 at Lake Hefner Golf Club in Oklahoma City.

Chase Jones was Keys’ top individual performer and 14th on the leaderboard, shooting a 74-72-77-223. Reed Trimble followed Jones with an 84-85-80-249, and Josiah Wolff closed with a 90-85-89-264. Evan Harkeader (90-92-83-265) and Gabe Enlow (92-91-89-272) also competed for the Cougars.

“They had a good year,” Goss said. “The kids play seven days a week and they get as much practice as they want at a good practice facility in Cherokee Trails Golf Course, and that’s a plus.

“A lot of schools only go three days a week, but we can do as much as we want. Availability is a big thing for us, and Cherokee Trails takes care of us when it comes to using their course for practice.

“We also have a lot of support from the community and sponsors.”

The Cougars also shined in the classroom and captured the Class 2A State Golf Academic championship. As a team, they had a 3.9 GPA and seven of the eight players had straight A’s.

“Pretty sharp seniors,” Goss said. “They take pride in the classroom and are a good bunch of kids.”
