Stilwell’s Emily Cruz Athlete Spotlight

EMILY CRUZ

Stilwell

Inspired by coaches, family and friends and a personal belief that you CAN DO anything you want if you just put your mind to it, Emily Cruz continues to meet every challenge with the desire to be first to the finish line.

A three-time state qualifier in cross-country and track, the 2024 Stilwell senior enters her final semester focused to not only reach the OSSAA track championships in May but to end her high school career with another gold medal effort.

“I push myself to improve my time every time I run,” replied Emily, who has gained the opportunity to continue her career after high school on the collegiate level at Rogers State University.

Cruz has earned her share of success evidenced by the medals she has won. In cross-country, she won the class 5A silvermedal as a sophomore and after winning another gold medal in last October’s class 4A regional qualifier, Cruz battled illness and finished in seventh place. She finished her junior year in track competing in the 4A state track championships running the 800, 1600 and 3200 meters, her favorite event, where she reached the medal stand by finishing in sixth placelast spring.

“It seems hard to believe, but before I came to high school, I didn’t like to run. But now, I’m totally in love with it,” said Emily. “With the encouragement of my coaches and teammates, I’ve developed the confidence to embrace the environment of running.

The inspiration of family is another key ingredient her Emily’s success.

“My dad (Jose) has been a big influence to my success. His encouragement empowered me to never give up no matter the circumstances,” Emily said with appreciation. “Coach (Joe) Means training regiment has also been a big part of my achievements.”

When asked to describe her running style, Emily had an interesting response.

“Cross country is my favorite race, just running the trails where I usually take the first lap hard to reach my pace to get in the rhythm,” she explained and then laughed. “Then I remember what my aunt always tells me, continue to prance just like a deer.”

A member of the Spanish and Outdoor Adventure clubs at Stilwell High School, Emily also excels in the classroom by maintaining straight-A grades including her favorite classes in math.

A caring and determined competitor in everything she does, Emily Cruz encourages others to embrace every opportunity to find happiness in whatever race you choose.

“Medals (and my cross country bibs) are just a reward to look back at your accomplishments but the memories never fade. Whatever you do, choose to be determined and believe in yourself. Believe that you can not only run the race but you can win it.”
