Tahlequah’s Trae Baker – Track Spotlight – Presented by AAA Insurance

Breaking school records and representing his community well, Trae Baker, a senior at Tahlequah High School, is leaving a legacy of grit and commitment on the track and cross-country programs. “What motivates me is representing my town, my family, my coach and all of my supporters,” Trae shared. His drive to succeed is fueled by the immense support system surrounding him, lifting him up through every challenge and doubt.

When asked about his biggest role models, Trae’s admiration turns to his parents. “My dad and my mom have a big role in my success today, from traveling to meets with me or giving me the best support I could ask for.”

Coach David Spears, with his impactful approach to coaching, has left a lasting impact on Trae’s life. “He has shown me what it is like to be uncommon, and I strive to be someone like him one day!”

Success in athletics requires more than just physical training for Trae. “Without God, I wouldn’t be where I am at,” he acknowledged, emphasizing the importance of faith in his journey. Trae’s dedication extends beyond workouts to include aspects like diet, hydration, recovery, and overall wellness.

Reflecting on his achievements, Trae cherishes breaking the school 800m record as the highlight of his career so far. However, for him, every race is an opportunity to set a new personal record, focusing on his own performance rather than specific opponents.

In practice, Trae enjoys the competitive spirit brought by teammates like Matthew Talburt and Taven Neal. “They have a lot of natural speed, and it makes practice that much more competitive.”

As a leader in his sport, Trae understands the importance of inclusivity and fairness. “It is my responsibility to treat everyone the same,” he noted, showcasing his leadership qualities and respect for his teammates.

Outside of athletics, Trae is involved in his church Leadership group, where he finds joy in helping others grow in their faith and witnessing the positive impact of spirituality in people’s lives.

Looking ahead, Trae plans to attend the University of Central Arkansas, continuing his journey in cross country and track and field. While he’s currently undecided about his major, Trae’s commitment to excellence, faith and community representation remains steady. “It means the world to wear Tahlequah across my chest.”
