AJ Lyons-Jerrell, a rising star of Pocola High School’s football team, has big expectations for the upcoming season. With an impressive record last season as the team’s lead running back where he compiled nearly 2000 yards of offense and scored 21 touchdowns, Lyons-Jerrell is set to turn heads this season and continue his journey toward playing at the collegiate level. 

Head Coach Jason Parker is certain of Lyons-Jerrell’s superb athletic abilities. 

“AJ is a player for us that is getting recruited,” Parker said. “As good as he has been at running back, he is going to set the state on fire at linebacker this year. He caught every college coach’s eye at our team camp this year, including OSU.”

Coaches can influence athletes in various ways, many of them not even involving athletics. When asked about his favorite coach, Lyons-Jerrell didn’t hesitate to mention coach Parker.

“He’s been there for me since day one, even showing up to my little league games to get me hyped up before we hit the field. Coach Parker’s guidance has impacted me both as an athlete and as a student and I couldn’t be more grateful for his support.”

Lyons-Jerrell also understands the importance of the support and friendships of his teammates, and how vital both are to successful sports clubs. 

“Ian Hardwick really changed my perspective on the game,” Lyons-Jerrell said. “He made me realize that the little things we do behind closed doors truly make a difference, not just on the field but also in our personal lives. Having a teammate like him has been incredibly motivating.”

Looking toward his upcoming junior season, Lyons-Jerrell is excited to represent Pocola and earn some recognition for his team.

“We’ve got a lot to prove,” Lyons-Jerrell said. “Our goal is to earn the respect we deserve and show everyone what we’re capable of.”

Lyons-Jerrell is also looking forward to anticipated matchups this season. 

“I’m really looking forward to our newest non-district game against Vian,” Lyons-Jerrell said. “It’s going to be a thrilling matchup and I can’t wait to compete against a strong opponent.”

After high school, Lyons-Jerrell has big plans for his football career. 

“I’m aiming to play football at the collegiate level,” he said. “It’s been a dream of mine and I’m going to work relentlessly to make it a reality.”
