Muskogee’s Zhyan Mayes – Basketball Spotlight – Presented by Monica Medley Century 21

Zhyan Mayes is a guard for the Lady Roughers basketball team and she brings her senior leadership to Muskogee.

For Mayes, basketball has been a part of her life for as long as she can remember. She was first introduced to the sport at a young age and fondly remembers playing on a toy basketball hoop that her parents set up in their kitchen.

“My first experience with basketball was at the age of four years old using a basketball goal that could be adjusted in the kitchen area,” Mayes said. “My parents taught me how to shoot the ball.”

Over the years, Mayes has continued to play and loves the opportunities that the sport has provided to her. Now playing for Muskogee, Mayes said that one of her favorite things is getting the home crowd excited.

“When I hear the fans cheer I feel motivated to play better,” Mayes said.

As the new season gets underway, Mayes wants to make the most out of her senior year and have fun. However, she has also been working hard to improve her game and wants her final year with the Lady Roughers to be a memorable one.

“This season, I plan to be stronger and more competitive than last season,” Mayes said. “In addition to my offensive abilities, I would like to showcase my defensive skills.”

One piece of advice that Mayes always adheres to she learned from her parents: “Never give up no matter how hard things get. Because the way you do anything is the way you do everything!”

Mayes is grateful for the love and support she receives from her parents and said that they are a very positive influence in her life.

“My parents, Ron and Shanta Mayes, are my role models,” she said. “The persuasion and encouragement I receive from my parents in all aspects of my life are constant and never-ending. The smiles they give me while I am on the court give me the power and motivation to conquer whatever tribulation I face.”

As Mayes approaches graduation she is looking ahead to life after high school. Mayes said she hopes to continue her playing career at the next level but is also very focused on academics and has a career path in mind.

“While in college I plan to get my LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) certification and later become an RN (Registered Nurse),” she said.
