Vian Lady Wolverines 2023 Softball Team Preview – Presented by Vian Family Dental Clinic

Vian Lady Wolverines

Fastpitch Softball

It’s throwing strikes, making plays with the glove

From across the diamond diving on the grass for the game I love

It’s I got your number, I got your back when your back’s against the wall

You mess with one, girl you got us all,,,we’re Vian and we’re the girls of fall.

Choosing lyrics from Brad Paisley’s hit song, “Boys of Fall” and changing a word or two and you’ve got the spirit of Vian Lady Wolverines softball for 2023.  John Mays puts on the purple and gold hat as head coach and is welcomed to the varsity dugout by eight returning starters.

“This team is excited and ready to go compete,” said Mays. “With the eight returning starters and newcomers that have played a lot of softball, we’re developing depth and the opportunity to play players in a variety of positions and keep the lineup sound.”

Maisie Wells (C, Sr.), a 4-year starter who led the team in batting average at .517 last fall, sets the table for the Lady Wolverines with experience on the infield as well as behind the plate. “She gives 110 percent effort every day and Maisie defines the word competitor by her example of practice, play and team leadership,” said Mays.

Lakila Drew (INF, Sr.) will be back at second base helping to secure the middle defense as a 4-year starter while Skyelar Locust (OF, Sr.), another 4-year veteran, will be in the outfield. “Lakila is a quiet leader that lets her play do all the talking,” said Mays. “And there’s nothing out of reach of Skyelar because of her speed.”

Mays also singled out Hannah Mattingly (OF/P, So.) and Rebel Simon (INF/Jr.) for making key contributions resulting in wins on the scoreboard. “Hannah is only a sophomore but has already shown the ability to deliver in the clutch. Rebel always comes ready to play. In the infield or outfield as well as at the plate, she will compete to the end.”

Adding to the success for the “girls of fall” will be Akeelah Truett (1B, Sr.), Kala Gibbins (P, Jr.), Hallie Russell (INF/OF, So.), Raleigh Terrell (INF/OF, So.), Carmen Rautenberg (OF, So.), Tina Rautenberg (INF, Fr.), Tressa Sadlin (OF, So.), Eden Girty (OF, Fr.), Scarlett Fields (INF, So.), Adan Crittenden (OF, So.), Kaidence Roark (OF, Fr.) and Cassidy Postoak (INF, Fr.).
