Morris Eagles 2023 Football Team Preview – Presented by Mabrey Bank

MORRIS EAGLES

Coach: ROBERT “BOBO” DANIELS

3-7

OFFENSE

In 2022 the Morris Eagles lost seven games with three of those losses by eight points or less. Coach Bobo Daniels is hoping that his now senior-heavy crew will remember those as they get ready for the 2023 campaign. “We really feel good about how our kids performed during spring ball. I think losing some close ones last year put a bad taste in their mouths and they are ready to go out and compete at a high level this year.” That optimism begins at quarterback where Daniel’s son Trey (5-10, 180, Sr.) returns. He had 757 yards passing and 434 rushing last season, with 11 touchdowns as a dual threat offensively. Jaylen Zackery (5-7, 150, Sr.) is the slot back and leading receiver returning for Morris. He had 12 grabs last year for 137 yards and is paired with Koen Burgess (5-9, 160, Sr.) who can also fill in at quarterback if needed. There’s also good experience in the line with the return of Gage Adkins (6-2, 190, Sr.), Parker Thomas (6-2, 210, Sr.) and Jackson Casey (5-9, 240, Jr.). Finding a running back to replace the now departed Erik Macklin will be a priority for Daniels and his staff.

DEFENSE

The Eagles will return nine starters on defense running out of the 4-3 set. Daniels will again be at strong safety where he had 61 tackles, three interceptions and a pair of forced fumbles in 2022. Joining Daniels in the secondary again will be Zackery who recorded 37 tackles, six for loss and scored a touchdown last year. Adkins, with 37 tackles, five sacks, and nine tackles for loss last season and Thomas will be at the defensive end spots and Cruze Lawson (5-10, 180, Sr.) who had 37 tackles, seven of those for loss, will be back to anchor the linebacking corps. “We believe in putting as many bodies as we can around the football and try to create as many takeaways as possible,” said Daniels. With seniors who have spent their careers trying to get back on the winning track in key positions this season, optimism is a key word in the Eagles camp this year.
