Running back Dontierre Fisher had 15 carries for 285 yards and five touchdowns in the Wildcats first round 47-17 win over Inola.
Checotah and Eufaula first met in 1915 and have played every season since 1922. The Ironheads have won the last two meetings narrowing the slim margin all-time to 53-50-1 in favor of the Wildcats.
OFFENSE
The name Dontierre Fisher is all you need to say about the Wildcat offense. Fisher (5-10, 200, Sr.) is a three-time VYPE TOP 100 choice and over those years he has amassed well over 3,000 yards rushing including 1,645 yards and 23 touchdowns last season. He has received college offers from the likes of Nebraska, Iowa State, Kansas and others so far. He’s also got a younger brother, Elijah Thomas, who will be a freshman this year who second-year head coach Zac Ross calls a special athlete. Fisher will run behind an experienced, senior-heavy line led by big Omarion Warrior (6-4, 315) who is also a VYPE TOP 100 pick this year, Kyler Pouncil (5-10, 255) and mountainous junior Levi Lawson (6-6, 320).
Trenton Dan (6-0, 210, Sr.) returns at a wide receiver spot for the Wildcats. The only real question mark on offense will be at QB where Jake Vernon (5-10, 170, Sr.) is expected to get the nod as he executes the Wildcat run-first offense.
DEFENSE
This is the side of the ball where Checotah needs to find more answers. The Wildcats gave up 40 or more points in five of their six losses last year but have six experienced seniors returning who hope to improve on that statistic. The secondary has a slight edge defensively with the return of Kayson Flud (5-10, 165, Sr.) and Dan who between them had 11 interceptions last year. They’ll be joined in the secondary by Rylee Campbell (6-0, 175, Sr.) at a corner spot. The D-line is also solid with Warrior at tackle and Pouncil at end in the Wildcat’s 3-4 set. Brock Butler (6-1, 185, Sr.) returns at an outside linebacker position for Checotah and Ross also mentions Kreed Hall (5-9, 170, Jr.) as a projected two-way starter for the Wildcats this year. “We are very excited about the work we have put in this off-season and are looking forward to competing in the fall,” said Ross.
