OFFENSE

After claiming the Class B state title in 2020, last year was supposed to be a rebuilding year for coach Josh Been and the Dewar Dragons. But as he has time and time again, Been merely reloaded and took the Dragons to the state semifinals. However, 2022 may be the toughest test yet for the veteran coach as he returns just two players to the offense off that team. “We’ll be inexperienced but talented-a real blue-collar team with good speed,” said Been of his crew. The Dragons do return last year’s leading rusher in Nevin Corbin (5-8, 170, Jr.) “Nevin is a very hard worker with great strength, better than average speed and tremendous vision,” said Been. Taking over the quarterbacking duties for Dewar will be Zack Mullen (6-0, 175, Jr.). The target of Mullen’s throws will likely be wide receiver Triton Mack (6-3, 160, Sr.) with Nick Hudson (5-10, 175, Jr.) also available. Hudson is also a capable fill-in at running back if needed. The lone returning starter in the line will be center Jaden Maxwell (6-1, 250, Sr.). The Dragons will run out of the spread offense.

DEFENSE

There’s a little more experience back on the defensive side of things with four returning starters led by Mack and Hudson in the secondary. The linebackers look to be Ashton Hawkins (5-11, 215, Sr.) who was the leading tackler for the Dragons last year and Tylor Sullivan (5-6, 175, Sr.). “Tylor is our team captain and was the special team’s player of the year in his sophomore and junior years,” said Been. The defensive front in the 3-2 set up is anchored by Kade Henderson (6-2, 220, Jr.). Been’s defensive philosophy is pretty easily summed up. “Always be over-prepared for your opponent. Have great communication and be great tacklers.” The Dragons are always an interesting team to follow and even more so this year to see if Been can pull another rabbit out of his hat and make yet another playoff run. The Dragons will see just a couple of schedule changes this year in District B-5 with Weleetka and Wetumka leaving, replaced by Midway and Caddo.
