EDITOR’S CHOICE
These are the top seven players in the Sallisaw/Poteau Area hub selected by position as chosen by VYPE editors.
QB: Jaxton Rutledge – 5-11, 180, Sr. – Poteau: The Pirates have plenty of confidence in their new signal caller to drive the Wing-T attack by making the right reads and the ability to run and throw the football.
RB: Todd Mattox – 5-7, 180, Sr. – Poteau: Another of the program rich running backs capable of picking up tough yards, the VYPE Top 100 pick gained 935 yards last year and has over 1900 yards rushing and 22 touchdowns in his career.
WR: Rylee Scavo – 6-0, 195, Sr. – Sallisaw: With the ability to turn quick routes into big play results, Scavo grabbed 40 receptions totaling 675 yards for six scores in 2020 while also playing an aggressive linebacker position.
OL: Jordan Decker – 6-2, 300, Sr. – Sallisaw: Continuing Sallisaw’s tradition of big linemen with size and strength, the Black Diamonds three-year starter will once again anchor play on the line of scrimmage.
LB: Dean Odom – 6-3, 210, Sr. – Poteau: A three-year starter, Odom brings a blue-collar hard working approach to his defensive efforts where last year the Pirates senior totaled 108 tackles.
DL: Ty McHenry – 6-4, 250, Sr. – Sallisaw: This raging bull comes fast and strong off the snap requiring opposing coordinators to double team the Black Diamonds defensive end who charted 63 tackles including 23 stops for loss last year.
DB: Braxton Peterson – 6-2, 205, Sr. – Spiro: With the quickness to play in the secondary or at linebacker, Peterson is a defensive game changer evidenced by his 95 tackles including 10 for loss plus five sacks last year.
FAN’S CHOICE
Based on fans votes in online polls, these are the top seven players in the Sallisaw/Poteau Area hub selected by position.
QB: Jaxon Fouts – 5-10, 160, Sr. – Roland: With excellent feet and extreme quickness, the Rangers’ senior returns to lead the black and orange offense in 2021.
RB: Ashton Peters – 5-8, 225, Soph. – Roland: After an impressive performance in the backfield as a freshman, Peters will be called upon for his downhill running style.
WR: Caden Milligan – 6-0, 165, Sr. – Panama: Work ethic is what makes Milligan a leader for the Razorbacks. The “all-in” contributions make the senior wide receiver a key performer.
OL: Elijah Vaughn – 6-2, 240, Sr. – Heavener: The Wolves running game will have force and quickness upfront as Vaughn moves from center to tackle while also doing battle on the defensive front.
LB: Rylee Scavo – Sallisaw: The durability and toughness of Scavo resulted in 77 tackles last season and will be a key to the Black Diamonds defensive efforts in a very competitive and balanced District 4A-4.
DL: Cho Cho Ramirez – 5-8, 260, Jr. – Poteau: With a low center of gravity, Ramirez returns to anchor the Pirates defensive front in their 3-4 alignment.
DB: Joshua Jorgenson – 5-10, 165, Sr. – Panama: The Razorbacks will rely upon the experience of Jorgenson to solidify their secondary pass coverage and run support this fall against a highly competitive 2A-5 district slate.
