OFFENSE

Slowly but surely the football program at Westville is turning around under fifth year coach Ed Baker. After going 5-36 in Baker’s first four years, the ‘Jackets won their first six games last season before dropping their final four but still finished with their first winning record since 2015 at 6-4. “Last year’s fast start helped revive the town and gave our young guys some much needed confidence,” said Baker. “A mix of success and experience should be key in helping us mature and grow this season.” Also possibly helping will be Westville’s drop to Class 2A this year where they will compete in District 2A-7 with Beggs, Kansas, Kiefer, Okmulgee, Sperry, Victory Christian and Morris. There’s a good mix of old and new on the offense with Austin Auffet (5-8, 155, Jr.) at quarterback protected up front by Jakob Drummond (5-11, 195, Sr.) and Wyatt Gifford (6-2, 350, Sr.). With the graduation of Bryson Bigfeather, running back duties will fall more on Jax Unger (5-6, 155, Sr.) who had 332 yards rushing last season, Trey Martin (5-11, 145, Sr.) and Jadon White (5-11, 210, Jr.) who rushed for 627 yards and 10 touchdowns last season out of the flexbone offense. “We will be a run first, run heavy team that wants to establish and dominate the line of scrimmage to make our passing game be timely and effective,” said Baker.

DEFENSE

The Yellowjacket 5-2 defense will be senior heavy with six returning starters led by Dillon Vogel (5-9, 150, Sr.) who has the size and speed to play either on the defensive front or in the secondary. James Wilcox (5-11, 260, Sr.) will be the force on the defensive front line while Zeke Edmisten (6-1, 160, Jr.) will patrol the middle at linebacker along with White. In the secondary it will be Jasten Pedraza (5-10, 135, Sr.), Avry Green (6-0, 150, Jr.) and Aidan Bradford (5-11, 145, Sr.), a four-year starter who Baker calls a great athlete and even better kid. Two more names worth watching will be youngster Colton Couffer (6-5, 245) who saw some time in the line last season and Britton Jacob who will be coming back after missing all of last season with a knee injury.
