Keys Fastpitch Softball – Season Preview – Presented by Northeastern Health System

Keys will try to turn the corner and make a big leap in 2023 under head coach Nick Zodrow, who returns a mix of experience and young talent.

“We are looking to make a significant jump in the 2023 season. We will have an influx of young talent this season that will make a huge impact on the program, and combined with the returning experience from the past season, we are very optimistic about the direction of the Lady Cougars’ softball program,” Zodrow said.

The Cougars, who went 5-14 in 2022, will be led by junior infielder/pitcher Maddy Hamby.

“Maddy will be our team MVP this year because of the hard work to refine her craft in the pitching circle. Maddy’s ability to pound the strike zone will give our team a chance to win every time out,” Zodrow said. “Softball starts in the circle, and we are leaning on Maddy to have a big year pitching.”

Payton Zodrow will be a newcomer to the program this year as a freshman, but big things are expected from her.

“Payton brings a higher softball IQ to the team. She can play multiple positions and swings a strong bat, and runs the bases at an extremely high level,” Nick Zodrow said. “Payton will be asked to hit at the top of the lineup, play shortstop, catch and pitch at times. Her ability to set the table offensively will be huge for our team.”

Another incoming freshman, outfielder Kallie Daugherty, will also be expected to play a key role.

“Kallie will anchor our outfield with her ability in center field to go get the ball,” Zodrow said. “Kallie will take hits away this year in the outfield, as well as be another underclassman that has a high softball IQ and hit in the middle of our lineup.”

Senior-to-be Bailey Davis will bring experience to the infield.

“Bailey is a very athletic upperclassman that can play any position on the field. Her ability to be a versatile player and not know from day to day where she might be playing is a huge benefit for us,” Zodrow said. “Not only does her versatility play huge defensively, but Bailey can swing the bat and runs well. It will allow us to apply pressure to opposing defenses.”

Junior Kylie Forrest brings back experience at the catcher position.

“Kylie is a huge part of our success with her efforts behind the plate. Kylie not only controls the pitching but at times is asked to pitch herself. She spends multiple hours honing her craft on the softball field,” Zodrow said.

Kamy Green, Jasmine Shaw and Erica Ward will aid in providing senior leadership. Ella Green and Emalee Hodge return as juniors, and Paige Foreman is back as a sophomore.

Freshmen who will contribute include Emmalynn Warren, Gabby Martinez and Maya Charboneau.
