Keys’ Payton Zodrow Athlete Spotlight Presented by Excel Therapy

In the world of hoops, where every dribble and jump shot counts, Payton Zodrow, a talent from Keys High School, emerges not just as a player but as a testimony to the profound impact of family, teammates and educators on one’s athletic journey.

When asked about a favorite coach, Payton breaks the mold, attributing the title to both of her parents, who are both coaches. Their influence surpasses the boundaries of a court, shaping Payton’s athletic career into something more profound than just a sport.

Teammates play a crucial role in any athlete’s narrative, and for Payton, her sister, Paizlee Zodrow, takes center stage. “She has always had my back and supports me through the good and bad,” she said.

Reflecting on her academic journey, Payton fondly remembers Mrs. Crow, her 5th-grade teacher. Beyond imparting textbook knowledge, she instilled life lessons that Payton carries into her high school years.

During the past off-season, Payton focused a lot on conditioning with activities like weightlifting, running and honing her basketball skills. However, the most significant preparation comes from within—the transformation of her mindset. “I needed to become a scorer,” Payton noted.

Basketball, for Payton, isn’t just a game; it’s a classroom of life lessons. Overcoming adversity is a key takeaway, with the understanding that challenges are inevitable, but one’s response defines the journey: “No matter how good we think we are, we can always learn something new from someone or improve.”

Looking ahead to the season, Payton has set some lofty goals for this season—changing the team culture, leading victories and defying expectations. On a personal level, she aspires to silence doubters and enhance her scoring prowess. Payton says the matchups against Sequoyah Tahlequah this season are important to her because of the intensity and atmosphere they create.

Beyond the final buzzer at Keys High School, Payton Zodrow envisions a future in which basketball continues to be a central player. Her post-high school plans involve seizing the opportunity to play the game she loves at the highest level possible.
