Q&A with Tahlequah’s Brock Young – Presented by Beverly Jeanes- Coldwell Banker

VYPE: How long have you played tennis and do you play any other sports?

Brock: I have been playing tennis now for five years and I do not play any other sports.

VYPE: What professional athlete do you model your game after and why?

Brock: I would say I try to model my game after Novak Djokovic. His game is heavily based on consistency and ball placement as opposed to power and being very aggressive. Novak Djokovic also expresses extreme respect and sportsmanship to all of his opponents which can seem rare in modern day sports.

VYPE: What is your favorite drill to do in training and why?

Brock: My favorite drill to do in training is pressure points. I enjoy watching my teammates play intense points against each other in hopes of trying not to run. Picking the underdog is always my go to so if they have to run they are not doing it alone. I also believe that the drill helps stress the importance of keeping the ball in play at all costs.

VYPE: What are your strengths and what have you improved on the most over the course of your high school career?

Brock: One of my biggest strengths is the natural chemistry I have with my doubles partner. Since Ethan and I have been best friends nearly our whole lives, we can read each other well and we work well with each other. I believe my biggest strength in singles is my relentless attitude to play the longest possible points. My slices have seen the most improvement.

VYPE: What’s your most memorable sports moment during your high school career?

Brock: My most memorable moment in my high school career was beating Pryor in the Metro Lakes Conference. In the tournament before MLC, Pryor caught us on an off day where we lost 6-2 6-1, but in MLC we finally got another chance to beat them and then take first in 1 doubles.

VYPE: What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Brock: Outside of tennis and academics, I enjoy spending my time with family and friends. Since I know my time will always be limited to see them, I have tried my best to make use of the time I have with them currently. For me, free time is very abundant, therefore I have a lot of time to be able to spend with loved ones.

VYPE: What are your plans after high school?

Brock: After high school, I will do one of two things: I will either go to college on a full ride, or I will enlist in the Air Force. Both of these options will yield the same result of getting an engineering degree. If I can attend the Air Force Academy, it would knock both of those goals off together so that would be ideal. I hope, if I’m able to go to college on a full ride, that I will also be able to compete at the college level for tennis. Once I do get a degree in engineering, I will try and pursue starting my own firm or work for a major company.
