OFFENSE

The long trek back to competitiveness continues in 2023 for the Indians of Sequoyah Tahlequah. The program was shut down in 2020 due to Covid and, coach Chad Hendricks has gone 1-18 since taking over the program on it’s return in 2021. But he is very upbeat about things as the 2023 season draws near. “We will be young, but I think our seniors will have a big impact on the team and the younger players and I feel we have a legitimate shot at making the playoffs this year,” said Hendricks. A lot of that possibility will rest on the abilities of quarterback Jalen Handle (5-8, 170, Jr.) who will start his third year under center. Injuries have cut his first two seasons short and so keeping him healthy will be a top priority. The heart of the Indians offense is wide receiver Brody Young (6-1, 165, Sr.), a VYPE Top 100 nominee. “Brody is a five-sport athlete and a three-year starter for us,” said Hendricks. “He can play several positions on both sides of the ball and also returns kicks. In the classroom he carries a 4.0 GPA and is developing into a great leader.” Another three-year starter for the Indians will be Jayden Marquez (6-2, 245, Jr.) who will be joined in the O-line by Dayson Pritchett (5-11, 265, Jr.) and center Logan Rill (6-0, 295, Jr.). Aidan Armontrout (6-0, 190, So.) who had 1,000 yards in total offense last year will be the running back for the Indians.

DEFENSE

Four starters are back on defense and Hendricks will need some of the younger players to step up on this side of the ball in 2023. Along the defensive front returning are tackle Hunter Webber (6-1, 310, Sr.) and end Josiah Foreman (6-1, 215, Jr.). Newton Martin (5-8, 195, Jr.) will return at linebacker and Young will be in the secondary once again. “We are an attack and read defense with a base 4-3 look with our desire to bring pressure with a purpose and play multiple coverages in the back end,” said Hendricks.
